TESTIMONIAL

“JEDI is a holistic program for developing computer science and information technology education, making free quality courseware content available for instructors and students. It includes a faculty development component through a training program that ensures upgrading and retooling of teachers, especially from regions that have limited access to expensive content and training. JEDI also organizes seminars, conferences and online discussions in partnership with student and faculty groups and organizations, providing the much needed forums for discussion and sharing of best practices.

An important guiding principle of JEDI is community ownership of the project. Every JEDI instructor and student is empowered to freely use, revise, and contribute to the different aspects of the project including content development, training, and evaluation.

JEDI was and is the biggest single project in the Philippines that advocates Free and Open Source Software and Open Content. It is instrumental in making open source a byword in the Philippines and an integral component of Strategic Planning and Implementations in Philippine schools, colleges and universities, as well as the Philippine Government. It is also instrumental in propagating the Java Programming language and developing a large army of Java programmers in the Philippines. This is a very important pillar of the Philippine IT Industry that services not just Asian countries but is an important global hub for outsourced software development.

When I was President of the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators, I had many occasions to visit JEDI implementation programs. I was amazed to find excellent Java programmers in even the remote places in the country. JEDI proved that given access to information, quality content and training, every teacher has the potential to become an excellent teacher. We have seen some of our Master Teachers coming from even the small, formerly unknown schools in the country as a result of JEDI.”

Dr. Jaime DL Caro, President of the Philippine Society of IT Educators
